JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A woman convicted in Mississippi of harboring illegal immigrants from China, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India and Mexico has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Sheren Nguyen was transporting nine illegal immigrants in a Chevy Suburban when it was pulled over on Interstate 55 in Pike County on Dec. 15, 2010, court records said. Nguyen told authorities she is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Vietnam. She had a Houston, Texas, driver's license and was apparently headed for Atlanta with the illegal immigrants.
The 48-year-old Nguyen was convicted in December in U.S. District Court in Jackson. An earlier guilty plea was tossed out by a federal judge.
U.S. Attorney John Dowdy says Nguyen was sentenced Friday to three years to serve and two years of supervised release.
