TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Former Astronaut Mark Kelly posted on his Facebook page Thursday that the day's decision to advance gun violence legislation is a "win for all Americans."
Kelly, who is also the husband of Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, wrote:
"Today's Senate decision to advance commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence is a win for all Americans who both value their Second Amendment rights and think Congress ought to pass laws that save lives. Background checks on gun purchases is the foundation of effective gun violence policy.
Background checks are supported by Democrats and Republicans in Congress and more than nine in ten Americans. I'm confident that members of the Senate and House will keep faith with their constituents and work to keep guns out of the hands of the most dangerous people in our society. There is always room for compromise. But political gamesmanship and special interest politics are unacceptable - not when the stakes are this high, not when there are lives to be saved."
Giffords was one of the victims of the January 8, 2011 shootings that killed 6 and wounded 13 others.
