PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix Fire Department investigators on Friday were sifting through what's left of a large home destroyed by an overnight fire.
Deputy Chief Chris Ketterer says several young people called 911 and then alerted neighbors on both sides of the home after seeing flames burst from the home from several hundred yards away in the Ahwatukee section of southeast Phoenix.
Ketterer says the witnesses reported seeing a bright flash and hearing a loud bang in the garage area of the home shortly before midnight Thursday. Then they saw the flames.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to homes next door. They were told that the home's occupants had just left on vacation.
