PAYSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities are looking for the body of a Phoenix-area resident reported to have drowned while kayaking on a remote stretch of the East Verde River in central Arizona.

The Gila County Sheriff's Office says other members of a four-person kayaking group reported that one of the group drowned Saturday afternoon when his kayak overturned and could not be righted.

It occurred on a remote stretch of the river west of Payson and north of Fountain Hills.

According to sheriff's Lt. Tim Scott, the other members of the group were eventually able to retrieve the body but had to leave it at a marked sight for pickup later as they went for help.

The Sheriff's Office says a Department of Public Safety helicopter is helping locate the body so it can be retrieved.

The identity of the person who drowned hasn't been released.
