Seatbelts save life of mother, two children after rollover crash

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Seatbelts helped save three lives Saturday morning after a mother and her two children were involved in a rollover accident on Interstate 10.  
 
Several people called 9-1-1 just before 7:00 a.m. to report a single-vehicle rollover accident on eastbound I-10, west of Kino Parkway, according to Capt. Jeff Langejans with the Tucson Fire Department. 
 
Langejans tells KGUN9 that the vehicle collided with a guardrail and rolled off of the shoulder and into the dirt.
 
A sheriff's deputy was first to arrive on scene and discovered a thirteen-year-old boy lying outside of the car. A sixteen-year-old girl and the children's mother were still inside the vehicle, according to Langejans. 
 
Once emergency crews from the Tucson Fire Department got on scene, they began assessing the damage. They noticed significant damage to the vehicle, but because all of the passengers were wearing seatbelts, they only sustained minor injuries, Langejans said. 
 
However, as a precaution, all three passengers were transported to the hospital for further evaluation, according to Langejans.
 
The National Safety Council reports that teens, commercial drivers, males in rural areas, pick-up truck drivers, those who are driving at night, and people who have been drinking are less likely to wear their seatbelts. Langejans reminds motorists that no matter the size of the car, seatbelts can save lives.
