TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson firefighters battled a carport fire on the southside, near Nogales Highway and Valencia Road, Saturday night.

Capt. Barrett Baker with the Tucson Fire Department tells KGUN9 that crews responded to the 6800 block of south 5th Avenue at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday after a carport caught fire.

Once on scene, firefighters noticed that the carport was engulfed in flames, Baker said.

Crews began extinguishing the fire and conducting a search of the home. The firefighters had to shut off the homes utilities and cut a hole in the roof to allow the smoke to exit.

Baker says the fire destroyed the carport, storage and laundry room and the vehicle parked in the carport, a Ford Explorer Sport Trac.

The residents of the home were able to escape without injury and no firefighters were injured while battling the flames, according to Baker.

Fire investigators are still unsure about the cause of the fire. The investigation continues.
