PHOENIX (AP) - The self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America has suffered a broken left shoulder.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio tripped and fell on his way to lunch Thursday in downtown Phoenix.
MCSO media director Lisa Allen says Arpaio was taken to the emergency room at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center after the fall but did not require surgery. He was hospitalized overnight as a precaution.
Sheriff's Sgt. Brandon Jones says Arpaio is expected to return to work in a few days.
On his YouTube account, Arpaio blamed himself for the spill, which occurred while he was walking near his offices at the Wells Fargo building at Washington Street and 1st Avenue.
The 80-year-old Arpaio was elected last November to his sixth consecutive term as sheriff in Arizona's most populous county.
