TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A boy suffered extensive damage to his leg after accidentally discharging his firearm during a hunting trip Sunday morning.
Deputies responded to a call about an accidental shooting near mile post one on Cascabel Road, several miles northeast of Benson, at around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Carol Capas with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.
Capas tells KGUN9 that a Benson resident and his 9-year-old grandson were hunting when the boy accidentally shot himself in the leg while trying to climb a fence.
Deputies and air support from the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the scene to assist.
Emergency medical personnel stabilized the boy at the scene and then airlifted him to the University of Arizona Medical Center, Capas said.
Medics say the boy's injuries are non-life-threatening, but that there was significant damage to his leg, according to Capas.
The boy is currently undergoing surgery, Capas said.
