CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Deputy Ivan Villafana of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office was awarded a Lifesaving Medal by Sheriff Paul Babeu on Feb 19.

Villafana responded to the Encore RV Park in Casa Grande on Feb. 5 after receiving a call from a man saying that his wife's dialysis fistula has opened and that she was bleeding profusely.

Upon arrival, Villafana found the woman's arm bleeding severely. He applied direct pressure and stopped the bleeding. Emergency Medical Services personnel transported the woman to a local hospital where she received a blood transfusion.

According to medical personnel, the woman would have died if Villafana had not performed such actions.

"I am proud of Deputy Villafana both for his service as a Pinal County Sheriff's Deputy and also as a member of our Armed Forces. When a family member called 9-1-1 for help, Deputy Villafana was there for them and thanks to his quick thinking and actions their loved one was saved, " said Sheriff Babeu.

Villafana has worked with PCSO since January 2011 and is an U.S. Army Reserves, assigned to the 56th Military Police Company. Villafana will be deployed to Afghanistan again next month for "Operation Enduring Freedom."

Villafana was previously deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 for "Operation Iraqi Freedom."
