NOGALES (KGUN9-TV) - Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano will meet with border security officials today in Nogales. This trip comes as President Obama and Congress try to hammer out a new immigration plan.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada tells 9 On Your Side he hopes more resources and more cooperation will come after Secretary Napolitano's visit to Southern Arizona. His deputies are on the front line of reducing violence along the U.S.-Mexico border.
"Obviously, somebody we know, somebody we can depend on, somebody that we know is very familiar with the dynamics of the border," Estrada said about having a former Arizona governor in charge of homeland security.
Added resources are working, Sheriff Estrada said, but Border Patrol needs to keep up with the latest technology.
"There's a lot of things that are being applied here along the border and it's all good," Estrada said. "It provides obviously for good surveillance and for good detection of people and activity crossing the border."
As for an overhaul to the country's immigration system, Estrada tells 9 On Your Side it is inevitable.
"You have to address the people that are here," he said. "You have to find a way to be able to include them into mainstream and hopefully they can accomplish that without putting too many barriers and hurdles in the way."
Nine On Your Side is sending a crew to the border, so be sure to stay with KGUN9 for updates on Secretary Napolitano's visit.
