COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz., (KGUN9-TV) - Multiple law enforcement agencies were unsuccessful in located a man who ran from DPS and Border Patrol agents during a traffic stop Saturday evening.
A Border Patrol agent stopped a vehicle on Highway 191 and east Justin Street, in Sunsites, Ariz., just after 5:00 p.m. Saturday, according to Carol Capas with the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.
Border Patrol dispatch told the agent that the vehicle, a 1988 Oldsmobile, had been reported stolen. At this time, the agent requested assistance from the Cochise County Sheriff's Department and the Department of Public Safety, according to Capas.
Once on scene, the DPS officer began conducting a warrants check on the female driver and male passenger. At this time, the passenger ran from law enforcement officers, Capas said.
Officials ran after the passenger while additional deputies and Border Patrol agent responded to the scene, along with DPS K-9 units, Capas tells 9OYS.
Officials also used a fixed-wing aircraft from Border Patrol to facilitate a thorough search. However, law enforcement was unable to locate the passenger.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Department suspended the search at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, but Border Patrol continued to track the man throughout the early morning hours.
