One person dead in small airplane crash near Ryan airfield

PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A 75-year-old man is dead after a small plane crash near Ryan Airfield.
Deputy Tom Peine with the Pima County Sheriff's Department tells KGUN9 that shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, a small plane went down near Ajo Highway and Postvale Road.
A Border Patrol agent who was first on scene, pulled the pilot, Terril "Ted" Edward Wilson, from the wreckage.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, says Peine. He was the only one in the Cessna at the time of the crash.
The plane is registered to a Tucson address.
9OYS has confirmed Wilson was a lecturer at the University of Arizona's College of Engineering.
Preliminary findings show that the plane was heading west when it hit the ground.
"The plane then turned upside down. So, it was a pretty violent impact," Peine said.
Investigators with the National Transportation and Safety Board will be at the crash site, Saturday.
