Court ruling allows woman to keep sanctuary open

BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. (AP) - A court ruling will allow a Golden Valley woman to keep open her no-kill animal sanctuary for dogs and cats.
Mohave County officials had told Hillarie Allison to use sand on the floor of her sanctuary.
However, Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen ruled that a 2007 ordinance does not specify the type of flooring used for animal sanctuaries.
Allison argued that natural dirt flooring was just as clean as sand and less costly.
Jantzen's ruling Monday allows Allison to obtain a county environmental health permit.
The Mohave Daily News reports that Allison already had a zoning use permit that allows her to have up to 200 dogs and 100 cats.
A lawyer for the county had said that sand does not harbor bacteria or blow away in the wind.
