Phoenix Zoo lets newborn zebra's mom pick name

PHOENIX (AP) - The mother of a newborn zebra at the Phoenix Zoo will get to name it this week.
The Grevy's zebra born in January weighed in at 100 pounds and is now on display. Zoo spokeswoman Linda Hardwick says he enjoys exploring the Africa Trail exhibit and is playing with another, slightly older male foal.
Zookeepers plan to have the zebra's mother, Masika, choose from three treat bags each labeled with a Swahili name Wednesday morning. The newborn will be called Pembe, Akili or Bakari.
He's the 19th Grevy's zebra born at the Phoenix zoo since 1987.
Less than 2,500 of the zebras live in the wild in northern Kenya and southeastern Ethiopia. They're distinguished from other zebras by their longer legs, more narrow stripes, and large rounded ears.
