House commerce committee to hear crucial metal theft bill

PHOENIX (KGUN-TV) - A bill being heard by the Arizona House of Representatives would create a new metal theft notification system will be free to use and will be allowed by law enforcement personnel to send detailed descriptions of stolen belongings to recycling operations within at least one hundred mile radius of a theft site.
The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Tom Forese, amends current law to authorize the creation.
Once the statue is created and once HB 2262 is signed into law, scrap metal dealers will be able to notify law enforcement of suspicious materials.
HB 2262 is set to be heard in the House Commerce Committee February 6 at 10:00 am.
Not only will the committee assess how the legislation has deterred crime and impacted the cost related to compliance for industries affected by its implementation but will also be required to report its findings to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House by Dec. 1, 2023.
Metal theft has been known for in the past for utility service interruptions and costly equipment repairs. It is more expensive to repair machinery than the value of the material being stolen.
Rep. Forese cited the value of the bill stating in a press release, "Metal theft is a crime that has exceedingly negative economic and social effects. I am proud of the work we have accomplished in the interim which allowed us to bring forward this invaluable legislation that will give Arizona the national lead in combating this crime."
