Customs and Border Protection seize poultry vaccine

NOGALES, Ariz.(KGUN9-TV) - Customs and Border Protection agricultural specialists at the Port of Mariposa confiscated boxes of poultry vaccines on Jan. 17, according to CBP.
The vaccines could have been used to inoculate against exotic Newcastle disease.
Prior to inspection, the vehicle's owner told officers that he was carrying two boxes of poultry vaccines. A passenger in the vehicle said she owned a small poultry flock in California and planned to inoculate them before obtaining additional birds.
The vaccines were seized because there were no permits.
“This port has encountered multiple shipments of vaccines of this nature attempting to enter the U.S. without proper documentation,” said Tracy Filippi, CBP Agriculture Program Manager from the Tucson Field Office.
Exotic Newcastle disease is a foreign animal disease that infects many domestic and wild avian species, Filippi said.
The last outbreak of exotic Newcastle disease in California cost $161 million and led to the destruction of 3.5 million birds over a period of 11 months.
