Police lift lockdown on neighborhood after searching for shooter

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Officers responded to a home near 29th Street and Alvernon Way after someone reported that a person was shooting at their dog and still firing shots.
It's not the scene you want to drive up to after a long day at work. It's not a call you ever want to get.
"I was scared," James Jacques said. "She actually called to tell me what happened. And I told her don't call me. Call police."
Sgt. Maria Hawke with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that the person whose dogs were being shot at took the dogs inside a home in the 2100 block of south Irving but could still hear gunshots. So James Jacques wife called police.It was her 911 call that started the lock-down that went on for hours in this south side neighborhood.
"She went out back to change some laundry, she heard what was ricochets, like bullet shots coming over, she told our kids, they were playing outside, she told them to go inside," said Jacques.
Someone had fired gun shots towards their backyard... towards their two pit bulls. Police showed up within minutes. That's when the gunfire turned towards them. SWAT locked down the area searching by foot and by air for the person police say fired gunshots in their direction.
Officers on scene did not know where the gunshots are coming from.
"Guys in army fatigues, with riot shields walking down the alleys," said Jacques. "Her father in law lives behind us. They actually searched his house. They were doing door to door checks."
The search dragged into the night. Families were desperate to get home. Police wouldn't let anyone in. Moms, dads and children forced to wait for an all clear.
"I hope I can go home in five minutes," said neighbor Nanci Orris. "I'm so tired. I really am."
No one was more anxious though then Jacques forced to sit back and watch TPD do its job and secure his neighborhood while his family sat at home.
"She's pretty scared," Jacques said. "I got some crying kids at home that I can't get to, so it's nerve-wracking."
As of about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night, the lock-down on the neighborhood was lifted and residents were allowed to return home.
Police say no one was caught during the search.
