TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The memory of fallen Nogales firefighter Sterling Lytle lives on, and Saturday's award ceremony was proof.
Last June, a man ran over Lytle, drove off and left him in a parking lot. One week later, his mom made the heartbreaking decision to take him off life support.
On Saturday, the "Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S." chose Lytle for the "Firefighter of the Year" award. The organization says it chose Lytle for his service to the community.
At Saturday morning's VFW District 5 meeting in Avra Valley, Lytle's mom, Sarah Lytle, accepted the award on her son's behalf along with Kevin Chaffee, a dear friend and fellow firefighter.
In front of an emotional crowd of combat veterans, Chaffee gave a speech honoring his fallen friend.
