Arredondo to be sentenced for fraud convictions

PHOENIX (AP) - A former Arizona legislator will be sentenced Wednesday for his convictions on charges that he solicited and accepted a bribe while he was a Tempe city councilman and misled donors about a scholarship fund to benefit his relatives.
Former Rep. Ben Arredondo had pleaded guilty in October to honest services wire fraud, the technical charge for bribery that is often used in public corruption cases.
He also pleaded guilty to wire fraud for setting up a scholarship fund for his relatives while telling donors it was for average youth.
The plea agreement recommends that a federal judge sentence Arredondo to between 27 months and 51 months in prison.
The maximum sentence is 40 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.
