MESA, Ariz. (AP) - The pilot of a homemade helicopter has escaped injury after making an emergency landing in a Mesa neighborhood.
Mesa Fire Department officials say the pilot was flying from Chandler to Falcon Field in Mesa when he was forced to land for still unknown reasons.
Joe Goetz tells reporters he remembers watching out for wires and people below before making the hard landing next to a fire hydrant, a few feet from a house.
The emergency landing occurred about 2 p.m. Tuesday near Stapley and University drives in Mesa.
Goetz walked away unharmed. Authorities say the landing was witnessed by many neighbors.
Goetz says the helicopter, a home-built Helicycle, will be retired.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
