Freeway issue again before Phoenix-area tribe

PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix area tribe may once again consider allowing a proposed freeway to be built on tribal land.
Gila River Indian Community voters narrowly rejected a proposal a year ago, but it is now being revived through a petition drive by some landowners and a would-be developer.
The tribe's previous decision put the state on track toward building the proposed South Mountain Freeway just outside the community's land and on a route that would clip the corner of a Phoenix mountain park.
The tribal council is expected to consider the issue on Feb. 6.
According to The Arizona Republic, the council could put the issue back to a tribal vote or simply approve a policy putting the tribe on record as supporting a freeway on tribal land.
