TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A 30-year-old man died after being shot by a police officer in an east side shooting Tuesday night.
Sgt. Maria Hawke with the Tucson Police Department says police responded to 550 N. Harrison Rd. after an officer-involved shooting.
Police initially responded to a call about a suicidal man at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hawke says.
Once on scene, police found Dustin Wernli outside and began talking to him.
After talking to him for about 15 minutes, officers attempted to persuade him to comply with their directions. At one point he began to remove a handgun he had in a holster.
When he did not comply with officers demands to not touch any weapons, an officer shot Wernli once with a rifle.
The man was taken to a hospital where he later died.
The officer was not injured, according to Hawke.
