PHOENIX (AP) - Police say a man suspected of shoplifting a BB gun from a Walmart was fatally shot by a Phoenix officer after the suspect left the store and pointed a gun at officers who were pursuing him on foot.
Phoenix police spokesman Trent Crump says 39-year-old Chuckie Stowers was pronounced dead at a Phoenix hospital after the incident at the west Phoenix store on Saturday afternoon.
Crump says Stowers refused to comply with officers' commands for him to stop and put up his hands after he left the store and took off running in the parking lot.
Crump says removed a pistol from his waistband while he was running and pointed it at officers who then fired their guns.
Stowers died later at a hospital.
