Homeowner shot during break-in, but not before firing back

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A gun battle rages in rural Pima County between home invaders and the resident.

As of Wednesday night, she was in the hospital and they were on the run.

According to the Sheriff's department it all began with a woman catching someone breaking into her home.

That person was armed, but surprise!  So was the homeowner! 
 
Shots rang out from both sides at the Robles Junction home, leaving the homeowner in critical condition at UAMC.
 
The victim, a 61 year-old woman, was air lifted here from her home, after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
 
Deputies say that bullet was one of several fired during this broad daylight break-in.
 
Initial 911 calls came in around 3:15 from the 9000 block of South Desert Well Road.
 
It was the victim on the phone.  She had been shot.
 
When deputies arrived, she was unresponsive, but they say the scene, at least in part, speaks for itself.

Otherwise deputies say ther info as to what happened is pretty limited.
 
They are unsure how many suspects they're looking for, or if any were injured.
 
Neighbors who heard the gunfire reported seeing a small, gold car leaving the scene, but deputies are unsure if it is connected to the crime.
