Bomb squad needed after small explosion in garage

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Deputies responded to a home on the north west side after the homeowner set off a small explosion in his garage while trying to make self-exploding targets.
Deputy Tom Peine with the Pima County Sheriff's Department tells KGUN9 that deputies responded to a home near Horizon Hills Drive and Galaxy Road where a man was creating explosives in his garage.
Peine says the bomb squad also responded to investigate what else might be inside the home.
The bomb squad had to dispose of the left-over material by exploding it, so there was another explosion late yesterday.
Peine says the material was too dangerous to remove, but since then everything has been removed and the area is safe.
There was minor damage to the garage and the man also received minor injuries, but he was not taken to the hospital.
Bomb Technicians discovered chemicals including potassium perchlorate, aluminum poweder and ammonium nitrate. When combined, those chemicals produce explosive mixtures.
Northwest Fire District also responded and Capt. Adam Goldberg tells KGUN9 the man was making pyrotechnics to be used on New Year's Eve.
No word yet on if the man will be charged with anything.
