TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A 23-year-old man shot and killed a woman, told her parents about it and then killed himself.
Sgt. Chris Widmer with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that Thursday just before 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots heard in the 100 block of North Pantano Road.
When they arrived, officers found 23-year-old Ashley Hicks with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Canyon Creek Apartments.
Hicks was taken to a hospital where she later died.
About 40 minutes later, family members of the woman called Marana Police because Joseph Leroy Francis had come to their house and told them he just killed their daughter.
Marana officers went to Francis' home in the 2800 block of West Curtis Road and upon arrival, heard a gunshot.
They found Francis in his driveway with a self inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives then arrived at the Canyon Creek Apartments to conduct an investigation and learned that Hicks and Francis were estranged and Hicks had a restraining order on Francis.
When Hicks arrived at the apartment complex with friends, Francis was waiting for her and immediately confronted her with a gun.
He shot her multiple times and then fled the scene.
Pima County Sheriff's are assisting with the investigation at Francis' home.
