COTTONWOOD, Ariz. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a $1.7 million grant to a nonprofit in Cottonwood to convert existing housing into senior assisted living apartments.
A HUD official says the grant to Christian Care Cottonwood, Inc., will pay for the conversion of 20 units.
The money is among $26 million awarded to owners of multi-family housing developments in nine states on Thursday. It will pay for them to convert some or all their apartments into homes fit for seniors.
HUD assistant secretary Carol Galante says there's a growing demand for such housing as the nation's population ages.
