Human remains found in south Phoenix storm drain

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have recovered human bones from a south Phoenix storm drain after workers on a cleaning crew spotted them at the bottom of an access shaft.
Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Brandon Jones says workers spotted what appeared to be human remains early Wednesday. Officials had to wait until about 9 a.m. before fire crews determined the air was safe for homicide detectives to climb down about 30 feet to the bottom of the drain.
Jones says detectives did not recover an entire skeleton and planned to re-enter the drain to search for more bones.
He says detectives doubt the person accidentally ended up in the drain. A body may have been dumped into the drain at 43rd Avenue and Broadway Road or washed down from upstream.
