Man stages burglary while house-sitting

Dwight Holmes staged a burglary while house-sitting in Sierra Vista and stole a laptop, among other items. Ultimately, police were able to track activity on the laptop to find Holmes.

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A Sierra Vista man fakes a burglary while house-sitting.
Sierra Vista police responded to the 4400 block of Redwood Street just before 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 9 after a man named Dwight Holmes called 9-1-1 to report that the residence he was house-sitting had been burglarized, according to Cpl. Scott Borgstadt with the Sierra Vista Police Department.
Borgstadt tells KGUN9 that during the initial investigation, officers learned that the side door of the garage had been kicked in. Numerous items were taken from the home, including an Apple Macbook laptop.
On October 31, someone logged onto the internet using the stolen laptop. Officers issued a warrant for the IP address that was being used to access the internet and learned that Holmes had been using the stolen laptop.
Police then obtained a warrant for Holmes' residence and found the stolen laptop. Police then realized Holmes had staged the burglary, according to Borgstadt.
Holmes was arrested and charged with burglary, identity theft, trafficking in another's identity and computer tampering.
