Ariz. charter school purchase policies under fire

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona is considering possible charter school policy changes after an Arizona Republic investigation detailed how school officials were profiting by doing business with their own schools.
The Arizona Republic reports that the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools is looking into school purchasing policies and will hold a study session on procurement in January.
A Nov. 18 Republic story , found that the deals, worth more than $70 million over the last five years, are legal, but critics of the arrangements say they can lead to conflicts of interest.
Arizona's regulations on charter schools are relatively lax. Nearly 90 percent of the state's charter holders have received from the state charter board permanent exemptions from laws that force schools to seek competitive bids for most contracts more than $5,000.
