TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - As Powerball lottery ticket sales soar, so does the record-high jackpot. It is not too late to take a chance at winning the record high $500 million prize. You have until 7:59 p.m. Wednesday night to buy a ticket. The drawing is at 9:00 p.m.
Even though odds are one in 175 million, millions across the country and many people here in Tucson are testing their luck.
Here are some tips if you are still looking to purchase a ticket. Avoid picking a number often considered lucky, such as 3, 7 and 11. Also, experts advise picking numbers higher than 31 and not lower ones that could be calendar dates like birthdays and anniversaries.
While customers have rushed to the Super Stop near Speedway and Alvernon since the Powerball rolled over Saturday night, manager Ben Gastellum told 9 On Your Side he expects sales to skyrocket at his store before Wednesday night's drawing.
"We're seeing a lot of high strung people coming in hoping for the big one and giving us all various conversations about their luck and their belief in luck," he said.
While he's enjoyed the increase in sales, Gastellum said he will pay close attention to winning the combo because he's bought tickets of his own.
"I can't even think of it," Gastellum said of what he would do if he hits the jackpot. "Just pay off bills and give half of it away."
Gastellum said he picks numbers based on birthdays, but other customers told 9 On Your Side they pick at random and hope for the best.
If you plan on entering an office pool to boost your chances, make sure to draft and sign a written agreement so things do not get messy in case you are the lucky ones with the winning ticket.
