Maricopa Co. to pay $45M in hospital pay dispute

PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County will pay $45 million to settle a legal dispute with three dozen hospitals and health-care providers over billing claims from emergency health care provided to low-income residents more than a decade ago.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the settlement last week that will pay thousands of disputed reimbursement claims.
The Arizona Republic reports the county long ago put aside money to pay any disputed claims while it appealed a court ruling. The case eventually ended up in arbitration.
The dispute centers on an old state law requiring counties to pay for emergency health services for low-income residents if Medicaid eligibility could not be determined within two days. Current law makes the state's Medicaid program responsible.
