TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A man has died after a deputy shot him in self-defense during a routine traffic stop.
Vladimir Cardenas, 23, died at a local hospital Friday night after pointing a gun on a deputy during a routine traffic stop near Oracle Road and Prince Road., according to Deputy Tom Peine with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Cardenas was wanted on a misdemeanor arrest warrent out of the Tucson Police Department.
Peine says Deputy Nicholas Norris conducted the traffic stop on a four door sedan at about 5:20 p.m.
Both vehicles were stopped in a parking lot, and during the stop, the driver pulled out a gun and pointed it at Norris.
Deputy Norris shot the man in self-defense
The man was taken to University of Arizona Medical Center where he later died.
During the investigation, deputies obtained a search warrent of Cardenas' vehicle. Deputies found what appeared to be different types of drugs and drug paraphernalia, along with a variety of weapons during the search, Peine says.
According to Peine, Deputy Norris was not injured in the incident. He is an eight-year veteran with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
He was placed on administrative leave following routine procedure.
