TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A record-breaking 114 volunteers worked with Arizona Game and Fish Department to spotlight endangered black-footed ferrets in Aubrey Valley, Ariz.
A spokesman with Game and Fish tells KGUN9 that spotlighting is the method used to capture and document populations.
During this effort, 57 ferrets were captured, bringing the total up to 110 for this year.
Twenty-three were captured in one night, breaking the previous record of 22. When the captive breeding efforts started in 1985, there were only 18 black footed ferrets in the world.
The black footed ferret crew will continue their efforts in spring of 2013. Individuals who are interested in obtaining more information can call (928) 422-0155 or send an email to azferret@azgfd.gov.
