Arizona forest proposes timber salvage project

SPRINGERVILLE, Ariz. (AP) - Officials with an eastern Arizona forest are asking the public to weigh in on a project to salvage timber in an area scorched by a massive wildfire.
The proposed project includes removing dead and dying trees on 4,000 acres of the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest, pile burning and planting seeds or trees.
The project covers about 74,000 acres impacted by the Wallow Fire last year. The blaze burned about 538,000 acres in Arizona and parts of western New Mexico before it was contained.
The public can provide comments on the proposed project over the next month.
An open house meeting is scheduled for Nov. 15 at the Alpine Community Center.
