Who killed Agent Ivie?
Reporter: Craig Smith
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz (KGUN9-TV) - While family, friends and colleagues work toward laying Agent Nicholas Ivie to rest, investigators are still working to track down his killers.
Agent Ivie's body arrived at a Sierra Vista funeral home from the Pima County Medical Examiner's office early Wednesday afternoon. Dozens of law enforcement vehicles escorted the hearse.
While the sad vigil goes on, there's still plenty of work to be done: at the crime scene, in the crime labs and anywhere else the investigation may lead.
The search for suspects goes on while evidence experts process the spot where someone shot and killed Agent Ivie.
Details are sparse, partly because investigators find them gradually as their work pays off, and especially because they keep what they know to themselves so they won't compromise the case.
The murder investigation is a joint effort between the FBI and the Cochise County Sheriff's Department.
Chief Deputy Rod Rothrock said a crime scene in the remote desert is full of special challenges.
"I think anyone would recognize, for example, a cartridge casing laying on the carpet in the living room would be readily identifiable," Rothrock said. "When you're out in open terrain on a hillside, its rocky, steep. You're talking about an area where they have to helicopter in the people processing the crime scene and the equipment to do it."
9 On Your Side has learned that the three agents under attack included one female agent and that she was the agent who was not shot. The other agent wounded is now out of the hospital.
There's still no information released on whether the agents were able to return fire. There have been reports that suspects were arrested in Mexico, however there is not confirmation for that.
