TPD receives grant for seatbelt safety

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Tucson Police Department accepted a grant to fund public education about seat belt safety and child restraints.
Sgt. Chris Widmer with TPD tells KGUN9 that the $23,000 grant from the Governors Office of Highway Safety will heighten the awareness of the hazards of not wearing a seat belt.
This will be accomplished through classroom and hands-on training.
Funding will be in effect from October 1 to Sept. 30, 2013.
The first event using this new grant will be October 6 at several TPD substations.
Tucson Medical Center and TPD will give out 1,000 free booster seats to children 5 years and older and between 9 a.m. and Noon at the following TPD substations:
- Santa Cruz Substation, 4410 S. Park Ave.
- Rincon Substation, 9670 E. Golf Links
- Westside Service Center, 1310 W. Miracle Mile
- Hardesty Substation, 1100 S. Alvernon Way
Children must be present at the events to receive the booster seat, and vehicles must have working lap and shoulder seat belts.
Booster seats will be handed out on a first-come, first serve basis until they run out.
