TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The driver of a semi-truck is dead after the vehicle rolled over on westbound I-10.
Phillip Wade Martin, 41, from El Paso, TX was killed Sunday when he lost control of his semi-truck after striking an abandoned vehicle on the side of the I-10 highway near the Houghton Road exit.
Martin tried to overcorrect his semi after hitting the abandoned vehicle, which caused his truck to roll over.
The Tucson Fire Department and the Arizona Department of Public Transportation responded to a semi-truck rollover accident on I-10 and Houghton Road just after 12:00 p.m. Sunday, according to Capt. Barrett Baker with the Tucson Fire Department.
Baker tells KGUN9 that the fire department was originally called to the scene because of reports that the semi-truck was on fire. Once on scene, crews learned that the truck was not burning.
In email correspondence, DPS says the semi-truck hit an abandoned F-150 pickup truck while traveling westbound on I-10. The semi rolled on the shoulder of the road near milepost 275.
Nine On Your Side wanted to know if the abandoned truck was supposed to be there.
"If it's not blocking it can be here for two days, for forty eight hours, if it is blocking than we can go ahead and tow it right away, " said Sgt. Frank Torres, with the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety.
Torres says if a vehicle is within the city limits, it must be towed within two hours.
DPS says the man, who is middle-aged was from Texas.
Investigators at the scene say they plan to look at the man's driving log to determine whether or not he was fatigued before the collision happened.
