TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Tucson International Airport received a grant to install a solar array over the public parking lot.

Officials with TIA tell KGUN9 that the $5.7 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration will fund the construction of the first phase of a 20-foot tall solar array.

Vegetated "green walls" will also be included in the project, that have live plants to help create a cooling microclimate effect within the parking lot.

The entire three-phase project will take two to three years to complete and will cost a total of $18 million.

Construction on phase one will begin in the Spring of 2013, and will cover five out of 12 acres in the main parking lot.
