GRAND CANYON, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A man died two and a half miles below the rim of the Grand Canyon after mysteriously becoming unconscious.
At around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call about an unconscious man on the Bright Angel Trail, according to Maureen Oltrogge, public affairs officer for the Grand Canyon National Park.
Bright Angel Trail is located about two and a half miles below the rim. A park emergency medical technician was the first to respond and begin CPR. Oltrogge tells KGUN9 that additional rangers were flown in and CPR continued for about an hour.
All life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead on scene.
According to Oltrogge, the man's body was flown by helicopter to the South Rim Helibase and then transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service in cooperation with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
