County vehicles get GPS devices
Web Producer: Rikki Mitchell
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Pima County installed GPS devices on about 800 of its vehicles, in order to encourage safer driving.
Tom Burke with Pima County tells KGUN9 that an added benefit to the GPS systems is that departments know where vehicles are at any given time.
The county monitors its vehicles for safe driving, such as speed, harsh braking, harsh accelerating and seat belt use.
The GPS system will help identify driving behavior.
If the county notices unsafe driving behaviors, or unusual travel patterns, an incident report is given to the driver's manager to address that behavior.
The GPS system will also help the county investigate citizen complaints sent through the "How's My Driving" hotline.
This will also lower the risk of county vehicles being used for unofficial or personal use.
