TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Chiricahua National Monument will offer free entry Saturday, September 29.

All 397 national parks sites will offer free entry in honor of National Public Lands Day, according to Jon Jarvis, the National Park Service Director. This is the only time that entrance fees for all public lands in the U.S are waived.

"National Public Lands Day reminds us all of the vast and diverse nature of America's open spaces, from small neighborhood parks to large national parks, and the importance of each one," Jarvis said.

Land management sites, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Forest Service areas will also wave entrance fees.

National Public Lands Day was started in 1994 to increase awareness of the value of public lands and encourage people to volunteer.

More than 170,000 people are expected to spend the day volunteering with various projects including, planting trees, cleaning water sheds, removing invasive plants and replacing signs in the 2,000 public sites.
