Dever memorial brought thousands together from across nation
Announcement about Cochise County Sheriff election to be made Thursday
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Even in death, Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever was the biggest guy in the room. His memory loomed large over the crowd of thousands that came to say goodbye.
Cochise County Chief Deputy Sheriff Rod Rothrock is slated to make an announcement Thursday at 4:30 p.m. regarding the Cochise County Sheriff election.
A memorial service was held Wednesday for the late sheriff who died in a rollover accident last week.
Although a lot was said during the service about the sheriff, it's what wasn't said that spoke the loudest.
The pain was transparent on the faces of the Dever family. As southern arizona remembered the life of a sheriff, to them he was just dad.
The sheriff known for his iconic cowboy hat, was a true cowboy in every sense of the word. A lawman who chose to serve his country, and whose death leaves huge boots to fill.
Members of law enforcment in attendance hope tonight's touching ceremony brings peace to the hearts of the Dever family.
A funeral procession began at 3 p.m. in Benson. The procession went south down highway 90 to Sierra Vista, where the memorial service took place inside Buena High School's auditorium.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office says law enforcement and public safety officials from across the U.S. attended.
