TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A neighbor helped keep a small cooking fire from consuming an apartment Tuesday afternoon.

Tucson firefighters responded to an apartment in the 7700 block of east Broadway Blvd. after a call came in about a kitchen fire around 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to Barrett Baker with the Tucson Fire Department.

Baker tells KGUN9 that the resident of the apartment was calling for help on the second floor of a three-floor building when a neighbor, Doug Sanchez, heard the cries. Sanchez ran into the apartment and found flames coming from the stove area.

Sanchez quickly smothered the pan that was producing the fire before running outside to grab a fire extinguisher. He put out the existing flames, keeping the fire from spreading to other areas of the unit.

Firefighters arrived on scene soon after and inspected the unit to ensure that the fire didn't spread into the ceiling or wall behind the stove, Baker says. Crews also helped ventilate residual smoke from the apartment.

No one was injured during the incident.
