TUCSON (Arizona Athletics) University of Arizona senior kicker John Bonano has been named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
This week’s award marks the second for Bonano as he was also recognized in 2011 after the UCLA game. Bonano was perfect in the kicking game and scored a career-best 15 points to help lead Arizona to a 59-38 upset of then-No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday night at Arizona Stadium. Bonano converted all three of his field goal tries in the game, which all came in a span of 6:14 from the end of the first quarter into the early second quarter.
After hitting from 22 yards and 46 yards (one yard shy of career-long), Bonano’s 24-yarder with 11:46 to play in the second quarter gave the Wildcats a 16-14 lead, one they never relinquished. Bonano was also 5-for-5 on PAT attempts. Bonano also kicked off 11 times in the game with four touchbacks. The other seven kicks were returned for an average of just 20 yards, and all told helped pin the Cowboys to an average starting field position at their own 24-yard line in the game (UA’s average starting position was at own 36).
