TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Climbing seventeen floors, seven different times, in memory of 343 individuals; this morning firefighters from all over Arizona put on their packs as part of the 2012 Tucson Memorial Stair Climb.

The first annual event honors the 343 fallen firefighters killed on September 11, 2001. In all, teams ran up more than 110 stories, the same distance crews climbed that fateful September day.

Money raised will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Organizers say while the climb is physically challenging there is an emotional component as well.

"We know what it means to put your life on the line everyday to protect the public. Those guys in 9-11 made the ultimate sacrifice so that's what we're here for- make sure they don't get forgotten," said event coordinator, Daniel Cramblit.

Each climber wore the name of one of the 343 fallen firefighters. There are 60 other stair climbs going on across the country. This is the first memorial stair climb in Arizona.
