Change in Arizona judge selection on Nov. ballot

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona's governor would have more power and discretion in the process of selecting judges in large counties if a ballot measure going before voters in November passes.
Proposition 115 proposes several changes to the current merit system of appointing judges to superior or appellate courts in Arizona counties with population above 250,000. It would apply in Maricopa and Pima counties and Pinal if that county continues to grow.
The Arizona Republic reports the ultimate goal of proponents is decreasing the state Bar's power over appointments and giving more clout to the elected governor.
A significant portion of Arizona's legal community opposes the constitutional amendment, saying it would create opportunities for politics to influence the state's judicial system.
