PHOENIX (AP) - Five people were taken to the hospital for treatment after fire engulfed two apartments in a north Phoenix four-plex.
Fire officials credit smoke alarms and passers-by with helping save lives after the blaze broke out early Sunday morning.
The Arizona Republic reports the top two apartments were destroyed.
Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Larry Nunez says two adults and two children had to be taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. A woman also injured her ankle when she jumped to escape the second-floor fire.
The fire started at the front of an apartment and a wall of fire engulfed the front door. Nunez says residents' only choice was to jump from the back.
