JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) - Authorities say a bicyclist who swerved to avoid a pothole crashed over the side of a bridge and fell about 35 feet to his death.
The Teton County Sheriff's Office says 42-year-old Robert Verhaaren, of Mesa, Ariz., was participating in an annual race from Logan, Utah, to Jackson when he crashed on Highway 89 about eight miles south of the finish line Saturday afternoon.
Coroner Kiley Campbell says Verhaaren suffered a possible cervical fracture and was pronounced dead at a Jackson hospital.
The race, referred to as LOTOJA, is a popular end-of-summer event that draws about 1,000 riders annually.
