TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A man is dead after he ran his vehicle off the highway and struck a tree.
At around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, emergency responders from Rural Metro Fire Department responded to I-19 and the Sahaurita exit after a call came in about a vehicle that collided with a tree, according to Deputy Chief James Stoltenberg with Rural Metro Fire.
A male occupant was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident and he was the only one inside the car.
The driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was transported to University Medical Center, according to Stoltenberg.
Officer Raul Molina with the Arizona Department of Public Safety says the man, approximately 48-years-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Traffic is still heavily backed up in the area of Pima Mine Road and I-19.
Officer Molina says crews are working to have the roadway clear for traffic in about 30 minutes.
